There are a lot of things to do with kids when travelling to Ladakh. Adventure and fun starts the very moment you board the plane to Ladakh. After an hour the whole landscape changes to hilly-mountainous terrain. You can see snow covered peaks. The landing amidst the Himalayan peaks through the Leh valley is an unforgettable experience. To enjoy your trip the most, it is advised to first acclimatise at least for two days. That means do not do a lot of physical activity. Rest in the hotel and let your body adapt to the atmospheric pressure of Ladakh. Start your trip after a day or two with full vigour.
Explore your hotel
Once you check-in, relax, you can order some food and take some rest. Or take a walk in and around your hotel. Explore the places where the scenic view is the best. Take pictures.
Chant with the Monks
Take your kids to the Monastery especially at the prayer time. It’s an amazing sight and moreover a great feeling to sit in the space with the monks when they are chanting together. The whole space starts vibrating with spiritual energy. A great experience for the kids. Capture the colourful paintings, clothing that you’ll see during the prayer sessions. Also, the colourful Buddha statues at the monasteries are spellbinding. Especially the one at Thiksey which is some 50 feet high and the one at Diskit, situated on top of a hill.
Bond over Adventure
Whether it is trekking, ATV riding, sand dune bashing or riding the double-humped camel at Hunder. You can have your share of adventure with these and many other activities that Leh offers. From small to long treks depending on your capacity, to rafting, to camping, visiting the wildlife sanctuary – one can indulge in the many adrenalin-pumping sports.
Visit a village
Leh is an amalgamation of villages. Even when you are driving through the district, you’ll see a hamlet of 50-60 houses and then for miles just beautiful landscape and then again another hamlet. It’s so beautiful to explore a day in a Ladakhi’s life – What they do, eat, their daily routine. Leh offers many such opportunities where you can visit and stay at the villages. Some of the houses have been converted to homestays so that travellers can come and stay in the heart of the village without any inconvenience. From Stok, Nimo to Lamayuru, there are many villages where you can stay with your family. Show your kids the rustic and non-city life. Whether it’s the farming methods or the produce – from apricot jams to yak cheese, there’s a lot to explore. Experiencing the homestays also gives the villagers financial help as in the harsh weather conditions everything is closed and they do not have any work.
Have a family photo contest
Involve your kids throughout the trip. Make them admire the beauty around. Ask them to click some pictures of the places they are visiting in Ladakh or anything they like. It surely will make them focus on things that are not seen in the city life plus they will have their full attention on Ladakh’s beautiful offerings – from nature, to people, culture and a lot more. You can also reward the best set of pictures.
Druk Padma or Rancho’s School
Must visit with your kids. Let your kids explore how the school is an eco-friendly one and make them aware about the school’s earthquake resistant infrastructure. If you get a chance do make them meet and interact with the students of Druk Padma School.
Honour the Soldiers
Every one should visit the Hall of Fame, especially kids. Share with them the courageous stories of our soldiers during the Kargil War. This museum would also impart knowledge on the type of food our soldiers eat, their clothes etc. when stationed at cold regions like Ladakh. More respect for the soldiers in their hearts plus would be an informative tour for them.
Besides this, Pangong Lake, Khardungla and many other known places that Ladakh offers would add more excitement and fun to your travel especially when you are travelling with kids.
