The German Bakery
When heard the name for the first time, it sounded like a character from some fairytale. Well, it does have a character but in a different form 😉 Did a quick dictionary check and learned that Pumpernickle means,
‘Dark, dense German bread made from coarsely ground wholemeal rye.’
Find this cute little German bakery tucked in the side of the road in the busy marketplace of Leh. Its big yellow signboard cannot be missed! It is run by a humble Sardarji from Kargil. The bakery offers fresh heavenly baked breads, snacks and sweets. Enjoy the assorted treats – croissants, sandwiches, pizzas, cakes, yak cheese, pastries, rolls and a lot more. Do try the Apple Danish with Cinnamon and the Cheese Cake.
The Pumpernickle bakery was also featured in the famous ‘Highway on My Plate’ program.
Well, here you can get your goodies packed for your road trips in Leh or have a quick bite. You’d just keep coming back, not only for the yummy food but also for the humble and friendly Sardarji. He sure is a great storyteller. Enjoy!
